COP27 Ends In Failure

The COP27 conference just ended in abject failure, as leaders failed to agree on the mitigation of emissions from fossil fuels and arresting global warming. Not surprising. God help us and our children, because global leaders won’t.

Below, relevant charts.

Fossil Fuels Are 80% Of Our Global Energy Consumption

CO2 Emissions Have Risen 800% In 70 Years

Global Land-Ocean Temperatures Up 1C In 40 Years

Heat Map In 1950

Heat Map In 2022

All charts are alarming, of course, but the last one is particularly so.  It shows that Arctic temperatures are rising the fastest,  4C+ over average.  This means:

  • Polar caps are melting fast, raising sea levels
  • The Siberian Arctic tundra holds immense amounts of trapped methane near its permafrost surface. Methane is up to 80 times more damaging as a greenhouse gas and its release will act as the most powerful accelerant of global warming/climate change, much more than CO2.  It means that we may see climate and habitat disasters happen within years, not decades.

  1. china really should make hay out of this... =)

    "Dear Africans. The evil west is destroying the world for all of us. On a per capita basis, they must be held responsible. They think we have no choice but to live with their selfishness. They are wrong.

    Here are the weapons. Let us take over Europe. Glory to the People!!!

    1. Greenhouse gas emissions per capita
      1980-->2018 in metric tons of co2 equivalent

      USA 23-->18
      China 2.7-->9

      But there's a LOT of them Chinese.. :)

    2. yup... but think about the target audience, the Africans... their emission is about zero...

      if things get bad, why should they stay and starve on their land?... glorious victory or death... I think they will buy it... especially if the arms are free.. =)

    3. I don't think that it is in China's best interest to be adventurist right now. They are content to play the long game and let the West impale itself on its own sword, it is doing so horribly well so far, after all.

    4. I defer to your specialist knowledge, of course. :)

    5. I thought this would appeal to the history buff in you... not historically accurate of course... but it captures the sense of an impossible event, slowly becoming inevitable...

    6. I have seen the series :) It's actually accurate in that Caesar was indeed declared an enemy of Rome by the Senate. He then marched on Rome and ended the Republic forever.... Hmmmm Trump? Though by comparison The Donald is closer to a Disney Duck than an Emperor :)

    7. not so sure about the bit where Pompey was actually trying to help the Tribune use his veto.... but I must say, it makes for a better story...

      Trump... feels a bit like Cato?... with a bit of Antony ...lions drawing chariots =)

    8. To me Trump is closer to the debauched Caligula or Nero, the latter like watching Rome burn (COVID) while he composed lyrical poems (spewing nonsense about bleach, etc).

    9. well... the U.S. political system seems on the road the recovery... if the Republicans can get someone good instead of Trump, there will also be genuine pressure on the Democrats ... and we are good...

      For China,... I dun really see any light at the end of the tunnel... and to be honest, the current silence scares me... Like I said a few years back. China will not invade Taiwan when it is actively complaining and sabre rattling... It is when it is quiet that you need to be wary... And it is unnaturally quiet now...

    10. Unless the Dems come up with someone in a hurry, DeSantis will be the next President.

    11. DeSantis sounds good.. I have no problem... maybe it will force the Dems to run someone like Warren or Sanders... now that will be nice. =)

    12. Unless there is a huge Depression-like upheaval in the US, Warren and Sanders are completely unelectable. Remember, even FDR was labelled a Commie..

    13. errr... laugh if Biden is electable, what is un-electable?.. =)

      the powers that be don't want Sanders and Warren.. true... they wanted Biden and worked hard to make him electable... play time is over... if they don't put up a candidate people want, the next time round will be worse...

    14. Agreed... MAYBE just MAYBE AOC is electable, or at least selectable :)
